Why I welcome your kids’ ideas … Dover, NH Family Photos
Dover NH Family Photos: When the Kids Run the Show (and It Totally Works)
I had the best time with this family during their Dover, NH photo session over Memorial Day weekend. The weather was perfect, the energy was high, and the kids came ready with ideas—so many ideas.
A few times I heard a gentle “just be a good listener” from the grownups, and while yes, listening ears are always welcome, I’m also a big fan of kid input. Their suggestions? Usually pretty great. And when they get to take the lead for a few moments, they tend to stay more engaged and excited the whole way through.
The truth is, when your kids feel heard, they feel seen. And that makes for some incredible photos.
During this session, we had everything from laying in the grass to sibling “love” poses to kitty snuggles. The family cuddle puddle might be my favorite—but honestly, it’s tough to choose. The kids were fully in it, start to finish, and the results speak for themselves.
Tips for Letting Your Kids Take the Lead (Just a Little):
1. Say yes when you can.
If your kid wants to try a silly pose or has an idea for a location just a few steps away, we can usually make it happen. Those moments of freedom lead to real smiles and fun energy.
2. Let them feel like co-creators.
When kids get to see their ideas come to life in a final gallery, it changes everything. They’re proud. They’re excited. And they might even be a little more pumped for the next photo session.
3. Keep the structure flexible.
We’ve got a loose plan and a flow, but I’m never locked in. If your kid has a burst of inspiration mid-session, that’s part of the magic.
4. Don’t stress the timeline.
Sessions like this are less about the clock and more about the connection. A few extra minutes to follow a kid-led idea? Always worth it.
Letting your kids take part in the photo process isn’t about losing control—it’s about gaining connection. When everyone feels like part of the team, the images reflect that joy. You’ll get laughter, love, and a gallery that feels just like you.
