Keeping Smiles Warm: Your Guide to Winter Photo Sessions in NH
Winter sessions in New Hampshire can be absolutely magical… if you’re warm enough to enjoy them.
From wind-chill at the beach to boots in snowbanks, here’s everything you need to know to keep your crew cozy, comfortable, and actually enjoying their winter photo session (instead of counting the seconds till the car heater kicks back on).
So whether you’re sipping something warm or living that iced coffee life year-round (no judgment here), let’s talk strategy.
📸 Layer Up, but Make It Easy
The key to cold-weather comfort? Layering. Thermal tops, leggings under dresses, warm socks, tights under skirts—these are your best friends.
If you’re not planning to wear your coat in photos, bring a blanket instead. Blankets are great to snuggle in between shots and in the shots themselves. Much easier (and cuter) than wrestling with zippers every two minutes.
Bonus tip: if you have littles in dresses, throw on some bike shorts or leggings underneath. Trust me, it helps with sitting, running, spinning, and, you know, being a kid.
🧤 Practical Tips for Happy Winter Faces
Coats & Blankets: Include them in the photos if needed. Cozy looks good.
Chapstick & Moisturizer: Start early. Dry skin and chapped lips are real in New England.
Tissues/Boogie Wipes: Yes, bring them. Yes, I’ve wiped noses mid-shoot.
Try on the outfit… while moving: Pick up a kid. Sit on the floor. If it stays in place, it’s photo approved.
Pre-Session Snacks: Cold burns calories fast. A snack beforehand keeps moods up.
Footwear: Prioritize warmth over fashion. Wet feet = session meltdown.
Pack Light: Bring just the essentials. I can carry a small bag with tissues and lip balm so you don’t have to.
🧭 Where to Shoot
While our seacoast spots are stunning, remember that it’s almost always a few degrees colder (and windier!) near the water. For those extra chilly days, consider our beautiful inland locations like Gilman Park or the interior sections of Wagon Hill Farm, where you’ll still get gorgeous backdrops without that extra coastal chill!
Home Sweet (Warm) Home Sessions
Consider a full session at your home during the winter months! We’ll start inside where it’s cozy and warm, capturing those sweet family moments in your natural environment – maybe baking cookies together, snuggling up with favorite books, or just being yourselves in your own space.
Once we’ve gotten those perfect indoor shots where everyone’s feeling warm and comfortable, we’ll head outside for some cold-weather fun. This way, you won’t have to worry about warming back up after being in the cold—we’ll already have those perfect indoor shots in the bag!
Plus, knowing we have those indoor photos secured often helps everyone feel more relaxed about braving the chilly outdoors for those final snowy shots.
This approach gives you the best of both worlds: cozy indoor moments AND those stunning winter wonderland photos, all while keeping everyone as comfortable as possible!
🕒 Short & Sweet = Still Gorgeous
On frigid days, consider a short session. Kids (and grownups) stay happier when we keep things moving. Even a 20-minute shoot can give us all the images we need.
❄️ Weather Policy
If it’s dangerously cold (think single digits or below), icy, or pouring rain, we’ll reschedule or move things indoors. Light snow, though? Magic.
I’ll check in 24–48 hours before your session if the forecast looks questionable. We’ll only adjust if absolutely necessary. Your safety and comfort always come first.
