Atkinson Common! Summer Newburyport Family Photos
Atkinson Common Family Session – Newburyport, MA
There’s something about photographing the same family over time that sneaks up on you. One minute it’s newborn sessions. The next, the kids are racing through rose gardens like they own the place.
I’ve been photographing these two girls since they were brand new, and this summer session at Atkinson Common brought everything full circle. Their parents were there, of course, but also their grandmother and great-grandmother. Four generations, together in one place.
We didn’t make a big production out of it. The garden was in bloom, the weather held up, and everyone showed up ready to enjoy the moment. We walked. We paused. We let the kids be goofy and the grownups catch up.
The portraits were important, but so were the in-betweens. The way one girl leaned into her great-grandmother without prompting. The way their mom and grandmother shared a look that said everything.
Atkinson Common gave us space to spread out without losing the sense of closeness. There was structure to the session, but nothing forced. Everyone had a moment to be seen.
It’s not every day you get four generations in front of the camera. We made time for different combinations, but didn’t overcomplicate it. The girls with their great-grandmother. The adults together. Each little pocket of connection was its own story, and we kept it moving so no one had to sit still for too long.
What I love most about this session is how relaxed it felt. Nothing fancy. Just a family being together on a warm summer day, with the roses in full bloom and no pressure to be anything other than themselves.
Photos like this don’t need to be perfect. They just need to be true. When generations come together, it’s worth slowing down for a minute and making sure someone’s there to catch it.
