FAQ: Tiny Toes, Big Questions

  • It’s a good idea to book as soon as you know you want these memories captured. I mark your due date as a tentative booking, and once your baby arrives, give me a shout when you’re ready. For the super sleepy squishy baby photos, we aim for that sweet spot within the first 10 days, – but they don’t get less cute. Anytime in the first month is fine!

  • I suggest maternity sessions be completed around 35-37 weeks depending on how well you’re feeling/carrying, but every baby + pregnancy are different, so whatever you’re comfortable with is great!

    You can book a stand-alone maternity session, add an Exeter, NH area mini-maternity session to any of my newborn packages, or if you have a different location in mind, we can add on regular lifestyle sessions. Alternatively, you can use one of the sessions in the first-year packages if you’re considering cataloging your baby’s first year!

  • Absolutely. Both are welcome (and encouraged!) in maternity and newborn sessions. We usually start with everyone together, then focus on baby-centric shots. Siblings and pets are free to hang out or take a break after their part.

  • A newborn session can take up to 2 hours. The session itself doesn’t take more than 45 minutes to an hour but there is a built-in hour for changing, feeding, soothing etc. These things are bound to be necessary and that’s ok!

  • Comfortable, fun clothes, or naked baby bottoms. It’s all fantastic. Extra diapers on hand are a must. If you have more than one outfit in mind, I recommend you start with the ‘most important’ outfit first. Just in case. If you are looking for the ‘au natural’ look, try to remember to keep elastic-waisted clothes and diapers loose for a few hours before the shoot to decrease the imprints left by them!

  • Let those worries go. A small, clean floor space for my posing chair by a window suffices, and we can work magic in nurseries, playrooms, beds, and couches alike. A quick declutter might help, but don’t go crazy. When I arrive, we can pick (and pickup) the best spots together.

    Just a few basics? Keeping the room warm helps keep your baby comfortable. Have a few favorite props or blankets? Let’s use them. Extra diapers and a pacifier can be really handy too.

    The biggest tip? Relax – babies are wonderfully attuned to the feelings of those around them. If you’re zen and chill, the better the chances they will be too.

When choosing a newborn photographer, I googled “lifestyle newborn photographer” and Melissa was one of the first accounts that showed up in my list. I was already in the hospital before our baby arrived and somehow this is what I focused on. We picked a day close to the due date and I came in kind of unprepared. I was so focused on our mountain theme, that I didn’t think about the fact that the one blanket I found was way too puffy for swaddling. But Melissa made it work and work amazingly well.
